Woodside's gas extraction plans on the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia are encountering new legal obstacles. The federal court has agreed to hear a legal challenge initiated by Raelene Cooper, a Mardudhunera woman and founder of Save Our Songlines. This development follows a recent ruling by the Federal Court that could limit the potential damages faced by Doctors for Environment (DEA) in their legal challenge against the approvals for Woodside's Scarborough gas development.
DEA is pursuing a judicial review of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority's (NOPSEMA) decision to grant environmental approvals for the project. DEA has criticized this approval process as merely a "box ticking exercise," indicating concerns about the adequacy of environmental assessments related to the gas development.
