Vote 1 for the candidates who put our health first.
Doctors for the Environment Australia calls on all candidates in the upcoming federal election to protect the health of Australians from worsening climate change.
As doctors, caring about our health is at the heart of what we do.
We see firsthand how our changing climate is harming people through deadly heat, fires and bush fire smoke, drought, floods, extreme weather and sea level rise.
We see more heart attacks, cancers, asthma, infectious diseases, kidney disease and mental illness in our clinics and emergency departments.
We see the impact of heat and heatwaves on older people, on young people and workers. We see more people experiencing heat related illness, strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. We see more people feeling suicidal and we see more domestic violence on hot days.
We see children and pregnant women harmed by traffic-related air pollution made worse by global heating and bushfire smoke.
The disruption to our climate is also pushing up the cost of living. Food, healthcare, power bills and insurance costs are leaving many people hurting.
The evidence is clear and indisputable. Pollution from burning fossil fuels is trapping heat making our world hotter and more unstable. This is hurting the people and places we love and is destroying our way of life.
We cannot delay implementing smart climate policies.
Instead of using polluting fossil fuels, we can continue to power our cities and towns with clean, cost-effective renewable energy solutions that are available now. Solar and wind, already account for approximately 40 per cent of Australia's total electricity supply.
We can’t wait 30 years for nuclear energy. This path will trap us into continuing burning polluting fossil fuels, it will be hugely expensive, and it poses serious environmental and health risks.
We have solutions now that are better for our health, can conserve our environment, can ease the cost of living and give us, our children and our grandchildren a safe future.
Our health cannot wait. For the sake of those you love, put our health first this election.
