EducationHQ: Teachers need help with ‘watered down’, ‘patchy’ climate education

Whilst rates of climate distress rise within children and teenagers, the mandatory sustainability teaching in classrooms that can be confronting and complex is often left to overworked teacher with little support.

Experience in different methods of teaching sustainability lead one member of Teachers for Climate Australia and former teacher in WA, Geoffrey Holt, to take children out of the classroom for outdoor, hands-on activities such as beach clean-ups.

The classroom can be a safe and supportive place to learn about climate change provided teachers have the know-how says Dr Cybele Dey, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and researcher at UNSW, and chair of mental health interest group for Doctors for the Environment Australia.
