The Federal Government's declaration of a 2035 emissions reduction goal of 62-70 percent below 2005 levels amid an escalating climate crisis has been met with shock and disappointment by health and community organisations .
Professor Nick Talley, Doctors for the Environment Australia chair, also criticised the timing of the emissions target announcement alongside the approval of the North West Shelf.
“As a doctor this double standard would be akin to me treating a patient’s COPD with puffers and oxygen, whilst still strongly encouraging them to smoke tobacco,” he said. “Such behaviour would be contrary to the principles of proper patient care and is unethical.”
