The Victorian Government is to be congratulated for its decision to drive the COVID-19 recovery with investments in clean energy ('A shot in the arm:' Victoria backs clean energy in bid to fuel COVID-19 recovery, The Age, 1 Sep). With Australia still reeling from a summer of fires and smoke pollution that contributed to thousands of hospital admissions and hundreds of deaths, this not only represents a means of creating jobs and stimulating the economy but also protecting health.
In contrast, our Federal Government seems fixated on a taxpayer-funded gas-led recovery. Accelerating gas production will increase greenhouse gas emissions when we already have a climate crisis impacting health. We need to ensure the recovery from one public health crisis - COVID-19 - doesn't add to another.
Our Prime Minister needs to follow the lead of Victoria and recognise that green stimulus measures are also healthy stimulus measures and therefore the only way forwards for Australia.
