January heatwaves are currently affecting NSW, South Australia, Victoria, the Northern Territory, and northern Tasmania with more hot days and nights expected.
Dr Kate Wylie, executive director and Dr Kim Loo, board member of Doctors for the Environment Australia, share a few key tips to staying safe during a heatwave, such as planning ahead, being aware of your own risk factors, and not drinking alcohol.
"The first thing that people can do is to take it seriously," Dr Wylie said. "To recognise that they are at risk from heat, and not to be cavalier about the heat."
"Talk to your doctor about your medications. If you have a fluid restriction for heart failure, talk to your doctor." Dr Loo said.
