The Guardian: Floods linked to increased deaths from heart and lung disease, Australian-led research shows

A new study linking floods and a rise in deaths from heart and lung diseases highlights the need for Governments to protect people for weeks after the event, according to a study that was published in the BMJ.

Dr Kimberly Humphrey, speaking to the Guardian about this important study on behalf of DEA, draws attention to the link between extreme weather, climate change and fossil fuels.

Dr Humphrey says the study “highlights the enduring and substantial health repercussions stemming from extreme weather events, such as floods, which are inextricably tied to climate change.”

She adds that without addressing the root causes- climate change largely driven by fossil fuels- the health impacts would escalate.
