Health professionals and community groups in Hunter have criticised the federal government's approval of coal mining extensions, citing concerns over health risks and climate change.
Doctors for the Environment member John Van Der Kallen criticised the mining, transportation, and burning of coal for adverse health effects, including increased incidences of airway disease, heart disease, stroke, and cancers.
The projects, including MACH Energy's Mount Pleasant and Whitehaven Coal's Narrabri Underground Mine, are estimated to produce 1.5 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, significantly contributing to climate change.
