MJA: Estimated carbon emissions for PBS-subsidised prescription respiratory inhalers Australia 2019–2023: a descriptive analysis

The Australian National Health and Climate Strategy prioritizes reducing pressurised, metered dose inhalers for decarbonising healthcare. These high-emission inhalers produce ten to thirty times more CO2e emissions than low-emission inhalers.

A descriptive analysis by a team, including Doctors for the Environment Australia  ED Dr Kate Wylie, analyzed aggregate-level PBS dispensing data from 2019 to 2023, aggregating the estimated emissions for all inhalers dispensed by year and type, and summarising age-standardised population rates of inhaler dispensing.
