Doctors for the Environment Australia has today welcomed the Queensland Government’s decision to reject the environmental approvals for the expansion of the New Acland Coal mine, describing it as the only sensible decision open to the government given the potential risks posed by the project.
Spokesperson for Doctors for the Environment Australia, Dr David Shearman says the mine expansion is a win for the people living and working at or near the coal mine, and for all Australians.
At stake were risks to health, such as respiratory problems, lung and heart disease, coughs, asthma and bronchitis; the degradation and loss forever of good quality agricultural land and, perhaps in addition, irreversible damage to aquifers; further damage to the Great Barrier Reef; and to climate change.
Doctors for the Environment Australia is a medical group that protects health through care of the environment. We are supported by a Nobel laureate, recipients of the Australia of the Year award, and many other leading health professionals.
The rejection of the New Acland Coal mine expansion follows the judgement of the Land Court which disallowed the development.
Says Dr Shearman, “The Land Court’s judgement is a landmark in legal industry for diligently exposing the health and environmental hazards to local farming communities, including transgressions on pollution and noise and excessive water usage.
"It’s reassuring to see the government respect the court’s decision and the warnings from medical and other experts about the very significant impacts of this mine."
