From 13 to 15 March 2015, we took over the University of Western Sydney for iDEA15- Prescription for Action.
After three amazing days, we came away with fresh insights, new collaborations, inspiration and bold ideas about how we as medical professionals can help lead the fight against the biggest global health threat of the 21st century- climate change.
A huge thank you to our sensational speakers, our 200 delegates from all over Australia, as well as a our magnificent iDEA15 team whose exceptional input over many months made this event the success it was.
Below is a brief summary of the event, for our full report please see the attached PDF (top right under ‘Files’).
On Friday, we had several interactive and highly informative workshops about climate change advocacy for GPs which also attracted CPD points. Saturday saw a bumper list of eminent speakers, including:
-AMA President Dr Brian Owler on video talking about climate change as “inter-generational theft”, as well as AFPHM president Dr Greg Stewart
-Former Australian Defence Force Chief, Admiral Chris Barrie, on climate change as a serious security risk
-Dr Richard Stiles on medical activism (do see his insightful piece in the MJA)
-The Climate Council’s Amanda McKenzie and Professor Lesley Hughes
-Dr Alessandro DeMaio
And on Sunday we heard:
-Former Opposition Leader and leading economist Dr John Hewson talk about his predictions for another GFC – Climate Induced?
-Dr Jonathan Kingsley speak about Indigenous Australians and Climate Change
-Dr John Collee on Gaia: the planet as a person
-A panel discussion about the environmental politics of NSW ahead of the election later this month. The speakers included the Environment Minister Hon. Rob Stokes, The Hon Linda Burney and Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC.
-Professor Colin Butler speaking about the Limits to Growth
-Associate Professor Melissa Haswell and Dr Marion Carey talk about unconventional gas
-John Cook on Making sense of Climate Change Denial
-Dr Eugenie Kayak and Dr Sallie Forrest on how to get involved with DEA (contact email@example.com for more information)
Climate change campaign launch
During the event, we also launched a climate change campaign coordinated by DEA and AMSA medical students aimed at meeting federal MPs and senators to influence the emissions targets that Australia takes to the COP21 meeting in Paris later this year.
