Australian researchers have predicted 484 heat-related deaths in Europe directly caused by a single fossil fuel project, Woodside's Scarborough, due to climate impacts. According to this groundbreaking research the project would expose 516,000 people worldwide to previously unheard-of levels of heat. The researchers say governments may utilise their approach to approve gas and coal projects.
Dr Kate Wylie, ED of Doctors for the Environment Australia is concerned about the ongoing global impacts of climate change, "We cannot pretend that the greenhouse gas emissions from any one fossil fuel project are negligible … that that is a spurious argument. Just like every cigarette is doing us damage, every tonne of greenhouse gas emissions that we add to the atmosphere damages us too."
