Join DEA this Sunday and help us make solar shine!
To convince the SA Premier Premier Jay Weatherill that we want Concentrated Solar Thermal in Port Augusta, we will rally in front of Adelaide’s Parliament House on April 30 together with the Solar Citizens of SA. We need as many doctors and medical students as we can get to make this action a success!
You can also show your support by signing a petition here.
Over the past 5 years, DEA SA has been working with several organisations to transition Port Augusta away from coal and towards renewable Concentrated Solar Thermal technology. This has been a long journey (read the story in Croakey).
We raised the issue that fossil fuel combustion has had many negative health consequences for the residents of Port Augusta, and for the world, due to global warming.
We have received support from many medical organisations including the AMA, RACGP and the AFPHM based on these health grounds. We spoke to many politicians, at many community forums and at SA Parliament House. At times, it looked as though we would never achieve this transition, however we are now closer than we’ve ever been before.
The Port Augusta power station has closed and has received the DEA recommended treatment (see video link).
In part due to the hard work done by DEA members speaking to key policy makers, the Federal Government has committed $110 million to support this project. Now all we need is for the SA Government to buy the power.
In June, Premier Jay Weatherill will make a decision, will the SA Government buy its power from concentrated solar thermal or Gas?
Now is the time to show your support for clean energy!
