The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) has developed an audit tool on how anaesthetists can Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Research their way to a more environmentally sustainable hospital workplace. The tool was developed by the ANZCA Environmental Sustainability Working Party, which includes several DEA members.
The Environmental Sustainability Audit Tool assists anaesthesia and other operating theatre staff to consider the environmental effects of their practice. The evidence base for the tool includes an ANZCA Sustainability Statement and associated publication.
ANZCA’s Tool references DEA’s practical guide, Improving a Hospital’s Environmental Impact: What can a doctor do?
The ANZCA’s guide is a timely development.
The Australian healthcare sector's CO2emissions are estimated at over 7% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Our healthcare is also a major contributor to waste and natural resource consumption.
DEA is a leader in reducing Australian hospitals’ significant environmental impact, and has a number of resources which can be found here.
If you’re a DEA member and would like to join our active sustainable healthcare group, please contact Dr Forbes McGain at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Not a DEA member but would like to make a difference? We welcome all medical professionals and medical students to join DEA.
Well done to all DEA members involved in developing ANZCA’s Environmental Sustainability Audit Tool- you’re helping to reduce healthcare’s environmental footprint one hospital at a time!
