Doctors for the Environment Australia calls on all candidates in the Wentworth by-election on Saturday to support increased action on climate change. The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report endorsed by the Australian Medical Association, highlights that we are in the midst of a climate emergency and urgent action is required to decarbonize, including the rapid phasing out of coal-fired electricity and an end to our dependence on fossil fuels.
Further warming threatens the health of Australians through increased heatwaves, bushfires, droughts.
Those who are especially vulnerable to increasing temperatures include children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with existing chronic conditions and outdoor workers.
With the IPCC report warning that we have only 12 years to act to prevent catastrophic environmental breakdown and its global health impacts, Australia needs an ambitious plan to do its fair share of curbing climate change to ensure a liveable planet for current and future generations.
Planetary health and human health are inextricably linked.
