We are delighted to announce the launch of DEA’s vision for a Healthy Planet, Healthy People over the next five years, and we thank all our wonderful members and friends who made the event on Saturday 15 February, either in person or via Facebook Live, a huge success. These next five years will be a critical time for action on climate change and other environmental harms, and we are confident DEA's "road map" will ensure our organisation is well placed to lead on addressing these enormous challenges.
Special guest speaker and DEA co-founder A/Prof Grant Blashki kicked off the launch by sharing his insights about the mental health impacts of climate change, and why health is an important lens for climate action.
Dr Blashki is a GP and Associate Professor at the Nossal Institute for Global Health, and is currently the Lead Clinical Advisor at Beyond Blue.
The Strategic Framework was presented by DEA Co-Chair Dr Eugenie Kayak and Executive Director Ms Denise Cauchi.
DEA's Strategic Framework in a nutshell
The wave of momentum DEA has been experiencing from our growing and engaged membership has given us the perfect platform for our Strategic Framework, which highlights our values, strategic priorities and key targets.
The Strategic Framework was developed after extensive consultation with DEA members and other key stakeholders, following an organisational review.
Over the next five years, DEA will build on its reputation for high-quality, evidence-based information to inform progressive policy on climate change.
An area of significant growth will be a more deliberate approach to campaigning, involving partnerships and collaborations with other organisations.
The evening at the Kensington Town Hall in Melbourne was not only informative and enjoyable, it also provided a wonderful opportunity to meet many of our members and friends.
Music was provided by DEA Board members Dr Ben Ewald on soprano saxophone and Dr Sujata Allen on fiddle, with improvised percussion by Dr Grant Blaskhi (on a plastic box).
It gives us great pleasure to provide our members with our five-year Strategic Framework and we urge all members to take the time to look over it.
As doctors, we have a duty of care to stand up and take action when public health is threatened, and with our new Strategic Framework, DEA will be well placed to help ensure a liveable planet for current and future generations.
