An Australia/Pacific COP31 would have provided an "excellent opportunity" to concentrate on the very real and current climate impacts for the Pacific Islands and the Torres Strait, according to Dr. Kate Wylie, Executive Director of Doctors for the Environment Australia.
“Their lands are drowning under a rising ocean, with associated food and water insecurity, infectious disease and the enormous mental and cultural health burden of literal loss of country,” she said.
For First Nations people in Australia, it would have been an opportunity to focus on the impacts of fossil fuels extraction on health and Country – such as the Santos Narrabri gas project on Gomeroi country and Woodside’s North West shelf processing at Murujuga, Wylie told Croakey.
