Dr. Emma-Leigh Synnott, the chair of the WA DEA committee, and long term member Dr. Richard Yin, support the RACP's calls on the incoming WA government to avoid and address the harms caused by fossil fuels.
They also suggest that the next government create a state climate change bill, phase out petrol, increase the capacity of the Sustainable Development Unit within the WA Department of Health, and conduct health campaigns to inform the public about the dangers of climate change and the necessity of transition.
Ending funding for fossil fuels and creating a healthcare system that is climate resilient are crucial, as evidenced by recent extreme weather and climate events in Western Australia, such as bushfires, heatwaves, Tropical Cyclone Zelia, and the flooding that followed.
