ABC News: Residents rally in support of pollution filters on West Gate Tunnel project

The $10 billion West Gate Tunnel project is designed to mitigate vehicle emissions, but Maribyrnong residents fear the ventilation stacks won't adequately reduce pollution. They are advocating for filters on the stacks, which were excluded from the original design in 2017.

Recent reports highlight severe air pollution issues in Melbourne's inner west, contributing to high childhood asthma rates and other health problems.

Residents held a rally to urge the government to prioritize health, at which Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos from Doctors for the Environment Australia said not enough was being done to reduce the health risks.

"The air pollution exposed to this community is unacceptable and causing harm, particularly to children," she said. "There are no safe levels of traffic related air pollution, air pollution is a health hazard."
