Climate change can lead to 'solastalgia', writes Dr Richard Yin ahead of Mental Health Week starting Monday 7 October. While nostalgia relates to pain from leaving one's home, solastagia is the homesickness you have when your home or sense of place is damaged.
Symptoms include feelings of grief, trauma, nostalgia, alienation, depression, anxiety and loss.
Solastalgia was coined in 2004 by Glenn Albrecht, an ecological philosopher and professor of sustainability at Murdoch University, in response to the psychological distress suffered by locals as a result of the changing landscape of the Upper Hunter Valley from open-cut coal mining, power station pollution and prolonged drought.
Dr Richard Yin is a Perth based GP and a member of Doctors for the Environment Australia
